Vibrant Blue Aragonite Specimen
Locality
Wenshan Autumn Mine (or Wenshan Prefecture), Yunnan Province, China
(Note: Wenshan is the premier and most famous global locality for this specific, intense sky-blue to turquoise botryoidal aragonite).
Chemical Formula
CaCO3
(Calcium Carbonate) with copper inclusions.
Physical Description & Properties
How it Forms: Aragonite is a polymorph of calcium carbonate (meaning it shares the same chemistry as calcite but has a different crystal structure). This specific blue variety forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidation zones of copper-rich limestone deposits. It typically grows in beautiful botryoidal (grape-like) clusters, stalactites, or layered crusts as mineral-rich water slowly drips and evaporates over time.
Where it Gets its Color: The striking blue-to-turquoise coloration is caused by trace amounts of copper inclusions (often associated with nearby minerals like malachite or azurite) trapped within the calcium carbonate matrix during its formation.
Other Interesting Physical Properties:
Crystal Habit: Botryoidal, reniform (kidney-shaped), or fibrous clusters.
Hardness: 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale (fairly soft and delicate, should be handled with care).
Luster: Vitreous (glass-like) to silky or pearly on the curved surfaces.
Structure: Orthorhombic (unlike calcite, which is trigonal).
Metaphysical Properties
Calming and Emotional Balance: Known as a deeply soothing stone, blue aragonite is highly regarded for softening emotional transitions, diffusing stress, and bringing a peaceful, centering energy to any space.
Communication and Expression: Associated primarily with the Throat Chakra, it is believed to aid in clear, compassionate communication and help artists, teachers, or public speakers express their insights with confidence.
Enhanced Intuition: Connected with the Third Eye, it can enhance spiritual perception, meditation focus, and a sense of gentle inner vision.
Grounding Spiritual Energy: While it stimulates the upper chakras, aragonite inherently carries a stabilizing earth-element frequency that keeps your energy grounded and anchored while exploring higher states of awareness.
